The Walter Center for Career Achievement is the career services office for the College of Arts + Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington. The Walter Center works with students to guide them through a unique academic and professional journey to help transform classroom knowledge into valuable work experience, leveraging in-demand liberal arts skills to design a life that they love. The Walter Center strives to host inclusive, accessible events which enable all individuals to engage fully. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at Indiana University Bloomington. It is composed of over 40 departments, more than 50 Centers, Programs, and Institutes, while also including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and The Media School. Job Summary The Career Coach serves as an integral member of the College of Arts and Sciences Academic Engagement and Student Experience Team, which brings together key student serving functions including academic advising, career services, international programs and recruiting. The Walter Center Career Coach helps students design meaningful and successful lives, obtain marketable skills and experiences, and prepare for job and internship searches. Department-Specific Responsibilities Provides career coaching to College of Arts + Science students, in both 1- on -1 and group-based settings, on a diverse array of topics including life design, career exploration, job and internship search strategies, professional correspondence (resume, cover letter, personal statement, professional portfolio, etc.), and networking and interviewing. Shares career development subject matter expertise in career-related events, workshops and classroom presentations. Collaborates with External Relations team member to co-lead an industry group, including customized career programming and networking, student communication, and industry-tailored coaching. General Responsibilities Assists with professional and career development of students and alumni through career assessments, exploration, decision-making, goal setting, and planning. Focuses efforts on resume building, interview skill development, mock interview, and job search preparation and navigation; graduate school application and interview preparation through counseling appointments and consultations. Develops and delivers workshops on career development which include networking strategies, interviewing, resume and cover letter writing skills, portfolio development, and using the internet for career search. Supports faculty and students with career exploration, internships, job shadow experiences, presentations, and facilitation of resources available for career development. Serves on various community and institutional committees to build partnerships across the university and among comparable universities to build knowledge base. Assists in the process of collecting and tracking data for office assessment purposes. Utilizes data to assist in the creation of office objectives and goals to meet the needs of the student population. Works through issues with a variety of stakeholders: students, employers, alumni, and faculty. Identifies and capitalizes on connections between groups of stakeholders and leverage those connections in unique ways through events and interactions. May provide guidance and delegate administrative tasks to other career services staff. May make process recommendations for improved operational efficiency.
